Are you dreaming of white sandy beaches, blue oceans, and fruity cocktails? Then you’ve come to the right place. Whether you’re searching for a destination for your honeymoon, family vacation, or a relaxing break with friends - Mauritius is the perfect spot.

As most travelers know, no island is the same, which means that you’re probably curious to find out all about this secluded location and if it’s the right choice for you. In this guide, I’ll let you in on my experiences on the island, my honest opinion of the resorts, and the best activities.

OK, ready? Here’s all you need to know about Mauritius before you book your trip:

When Is The Best Time To Visit Mauritius?

Given Mauritius's location in the southern hemisphere, its seasons are the reverse of those in the north, with summer starting in December. However, It's worth noting that December can bring higher temperatures and occasional rain. To make the most of your trip, the best time to visit Mauritius is between May and October. During these months, temperatures range from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius, making it perfect for enjoying the island's beaches, water sports, and lush landscapes with fewer crowds.

I visited in October and got to enjoy 30-degree Celcius weather without rain. It's worth noting that the south side of the island can be windy, so consider packing cardigans or blazers for your trip.

Where Are The Best Places To Stay In Mauritius?

When seeking the best places to stay in Mauritius, you'll discover there are many options to choose from. One of the most important things to keep in mind before booking your accommodation is the location. Most resorts are located on the island's east coast, as the beaches are more beautiful and the ocean waves are calmer. However, most of them are located far outside any city or town, making going to local restaurants or other public places difficult. Ask yourself first what you want from your vacation (relaxation, exploration, both?) before booking a place to stay.

I stayed at four different resorts in Mauritius to experience all the island has to offer, and I’m glad I did. However, looking back, I wish I would’ve stayed for at least one night in Grand Baie - a lively hub with local restaurants, vibrant nightlife, and mostly a place where you don’t only run into tourists. It’s still a touristy place; however, the overall vibe feels more authentic. Learn from my mistake and treat yourself to a night in Grand Baie.

In need of a hotel recommendation in Mauritius, or do you already have a resort in mind? Read more about the hotels that I’ve stayed at and the ones I personally recommend (and which ones I do not) here:

How Can I Get Around The Island Efficiently?

Mauritius Roads

Navigating Mauritius efficiently is essential to make the most of your trip. The island offers a variety of transportation options, including taxis, which are convenient for shorter journeys and day trips to attractions. Most resorts have a network of taxis at their disposal, so if you’re planning to explore the island with a guide, you absolutely can.

One tip: If you plan on doing everything by taxi and you are worried about the costs, note that most resorts have a choice of local taxis or hotel cars. The hotel cars are twice as expensive, and in my experience, the two don’t differ much in “luxury”.

When looking for more flexibility, renting a car is a great option, and you can park easily at any resort. Do keep in mind that Mauritians drive on the left side of the road.

This point is another “in hindsight, I wish I would’ve…”. I’m not used to driving on the left side, and I visited Seychelles two years prior, so I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to get used to the roads. However, compared to Seychelles, the roads in Mauritius are less uphill and without many sharp curves, so looking back, I think I would’ve managed.

What Are The Must-See Attractions And Activities In Mauritius?

Mauritius is a treasure trove of various attractions and activities for an unforgettable vacation. When exploring the island, there are two distinct types of tours, each offering a unique and captivating experience. You can opt for a tour of the island's northern side, where you'll visit the bustling capital city of Port Louis, explore the vibrant markets, and unwind in the coastal haven of Grand Baie.

Alternatively, venture to the southern part of the island for a more nature-focused journey. Discover the pristine beauty of the Black River Gorges National Park, visit the local tea factory, and embark on an exhilarating adventure in the Vallee of Colors. Get your adrenaline pumping as you zip-line or take a quad ride through the national park, surrounded by breathtaking natural scenery.

Another tip from my side: if you want to see the island from above and do a helicopter tour, please book ahead. Most hotels use Air Mauritius as their go-to, and you can book a spot on their website and pay on arrival. I’m usually a planner, but I decided to change my personality before our trip and become spontaneous. This decision cost us the opportunity to do a helicopter tour as all spots were booked. Learn from my mistake and book AHEAD.

What Are Other Things I Need To Know About Mauritius?

Just some other things that come to mind that might be nice to know: If you’re planning to venture out on a tour, I would definitely take some cash with you. All activities, restaurants, and stores do take cards, but if you want to buy water at a national park, you will need cash. The local currency is the Mauritian Rupee (MUR).

Please take into account that Mauritius is expensive. Bring enough money with you because you will need it. Even outside of the resorts, at, for example, supermarkets, it surprised me how the prices are similar to most parts of Europe.

Everybody speaks either English or French, so you won’t experience much of a language barrier. Although learning a couple of phrases in Creole will be appreciated.

I hope this was helpful. If you have any more questions, feel free to reach out on here or on Instagram, and I’m more than happy to answer any of your questions. Happy travels!
