The first time I saw someone wear a scarf as a top was Christina Aguilera at the 2002 VMAs. I was 12, and I had my birthday party coming up. For weeks I had begged my mom if I could wear a red paisley bandana as a top for the event. Clearly, she said no. And when she found out I did it anyway, she was furious. With my mom holding my arm, I was dragged out of my party and forced to change.

Eighteen years later, I can confidently say I no longer fit into that red paisley bandana. However, wearing a scarf as a top, depending on the kind of course, is a great casual style for summer. Lucky for me and my 12-year-old self, I can revisit my 2000s fashion choices with this summer trend. Before we start, just a small disclaimer: I’m terrible at even the most straightforward DIY things, so if I can do this, so can you.

So, proper to 2000s fashion, here are 4 ways to wear a silk scarf as a top, just in time for the summer season to start.

#1 Front Knot Top

The great part about this style is that you can still wear a strapless bra underneath (if you prefer, you can also wear it without). So, if you want to feel more secure while enjoying the sun, this is the one for you. You only need to grab your scarf, fold it in a triangle, and put it over your bra. Afterward, you can tie it to the front. You can either choose to tuck the endings under or leave them long. As a recommendation, you can use safety pins here. I’m sure there might be a way to do it without, but I would use them to ensure you don’t end up without a top after a few minutes.

If you’re not a huge fan of crop tops but like this style, you can also do a variation of the Triangle Top but backward. Follow the steps from number 2 but ensure the pointed side is on your back and the knot is in the front. This way, you still have a Front Knot Top but it won’t feel as revealing.

 #2 Triangle Top

This is the easier one out of them all. You only need to fold your scarf diagonally to create a large triangle. Tie the two ends together into a knot on your back. That’s it. Quick and simple.

#3 Front Cross Top

If you’re feeling like Xtina this summer – this is the one for you. Fold your scarf diagonally to create a triangle. The two ends should be in the front, while the pointed side is in the back. Cross both ends and tie them around your neck. Happy Hot Girl Summer!

#4 Halter Top

The same goes for the Halter Top. It’s a variant of the Front Cross Top but a bit more on the safe side. To create it, you tie the two corners in a knot. This will result in two small edges you can tie around your neck. You’ll be left with something that looks like a bag now. Afterward you take the two hanging corners and you can easily connect those in the back.

Whether you’re going all out this summer or like to keep things simple – there’s an option for everyone. And the best part is that buying only one piece of fabric ends up with five different tops.  So, go out there and make Christina and my 12-year-old self proud.
