Welcome to Kraków! A city in the south of Poland where history, culture, and vibrant energy meet. If you want an unforgettable experience, this place’s got you coverd. If you're planning a long weekend escape, Krakow is the perfect destination to immerse yourself in rich traditions, explore historic sites, and savor the local flavors.

Planning an itinerary for a new city can be difficult; that’s why I’m here to help you out. As someone who has visited Krakow many times, as my family lives there, I know all the ins and outs from a local, but also what it feels like to be a tourist. I’ve shown many friends around this city, so I’ll share all my favorite places, must-visit spots, and exciting activities.

Let’s go - Here is the perfect itinerary for a long weekend in Krakow:

Day 1: Unveil the Old Town's Secrets

Krakow Old Town

Begin your adventure in the heart of Krakow—the Old Town. Wander through the Main Market Square, where the impressive St. Mary's Basilica and the historical Cloth Hall await. Don’t forget to visit the Underground Museum. Continue to the Royal Wawel Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and explore the cathedral and castle grounds, immersing yourself in centuries of Polish history.

As the sun sets, find a cozy restaurant in the Old Town to savor traditional Polish dishes. Indulge in pierogi and Polish sausage, and let the culinary delights set the tone for your Krakow experience.

Depending on when you visit, here are some recommendations restaurant-wise:

  • Head to Miedzymiastowa for bites and cocktails while you enjoy views of the main square from their terrace.

  • Looking for an easy traditional dinner on a budget? Restauracja Sukiennice has got you covered. Ask for a table downstairs for a unique underground dining experience.

  • Craving sushi? Nago is the place to go.

  • Don’t mind walking a tiny bit further? Go to Pino River for a dining experience on a boat with a view of the Wawel Castle. Request a table on the deck when you make your reservation.

Day 2: Salt Mines and Kazimierz's Heartbeat

On day two, head underground to the Wieliczka Salt Mine. Marvel at salt sculptures and wind through labyrinthine tunnels—a unique blend of history and art. After emerging from the depths, head to the heart of Krakow—Kazimierz, the historic Jewish quarter. Stroll through streets adorned with art, history, and an unmistakable charm. The Schindler's Factory Museum shares wartime tales, while the Remuh Synagogue and Old Jewish Cemetery pay tribute to resilience.

Come evening, join the locals in the lively Kazimierz nightlife. Discover trending bars and music spots, creating connections as vibrant as the atmosphere.

Day 3: Auschwitz and Nature's Tranquility

auschwitz

Embark on an essential journey to Auschwitz-Birkenau, paying tribute to the victims of the Holocaust. The memorial and museum provide a powerful and educational experience that is both heartbreaking and enlightening. As the concentration camp is located about an hour outside of Krakow, I recommend going there with a guide leaving from the center. You can get there by car as well, but it’s probably easier to go in an organized group. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes as you’ll be walking a lot.

To end your long weekend on a tranquil note, head to Zakrzówek afterward for a nature retreat. Unwind by the turquoise waters, soaking in the serenity of this hidden oasis.

Extra Day Activity: Zakopane

Staying longer in Kraków? Great! In that case, you’ll have time to visit Zakopane, a Mountain town close to the Slovakian border. You can take a day trip from Kraków to Zakopane to enjoy the fresh mountain air, see great views from Gubałówka, or relax at the thermal baths and end your trip to Poland on a chill note.
