The Best (Instagrammable) Places to Eat and Drink In Athens
Looking for a great spot for a weekend getaway in Europe? I’ve got you. Athens, Greece, is the perfect location whether you’re looking to chill, go sightseeing, or even both. Known for its beautiful architectural sites and extensive history, the city tends to be pretty busy during summer. But worry not; there is much to do in Winter as well. The streets are more quiet than usual. Plus, you get to enjoy the Acropolis without tripping over a bunch of tourists. Sounds like a win-win to me, right ;)
So, are you planning on heading to Athens soon? You’ve got to eat. Here are a couple of cool restaurant and bar recommendations. A small disclaimer before I start: This is, of course, my humble opinion as a tourist of Athens, just like your future yourself. But there’s nothing wrong with visiting tourist places, right? These spots tend to be popular for a reason. Let’s go!
THE CLUMSIES
Named 4th best bar in the world. The atmosphere is laid-back and not pretentious in any way. They have an extensive cocktail menu with a wide variety of drinks. Can’t find anything you like? Just sit at the bar and tell them what kind of flavors you’re into and they’ll make it for you. This place is pretty packed in the evenings, so I recommend coming early (I went around 7-ish and still had quite some tables to choose from).
NOEL
If you love vintage and baroque decorations, this is the place for you. This restaurant/bar has a great atmosphere, and the bartenders/waiters are very friendly. The experience already starts when you get the menu, and it doesn’t stop there. The food is incredible, and the cocktails are unlike anywhere else. I would recommend making a reservation because this place gets pretty busy.
SENSE
If you’re feeling fancy, this is a nice place to enjoy a classy dinner. This Michelin restaurant has a direct view of the Acropolis, and the tables are set up in a way that everyone in your party can enjoy the scenery. The only downside to this restaurant is that they serve a set menu (you can choose between vegetarian and meat) so if you’re a picky eater I wouldn’t risk it.
DRAXMI
Hello, World!
Not looking for anything lavish? I got you. Draxmi is a super relaxed bar with inside seating as well as outside. High tables, bar chairs, beer (they also have cocktails). What else can you ask for? Oh, and no tourists in sight (except for me clearly)
PLAKA
Moving on from a non-touristy spot to a full-blown tourist attraction. – Plaka is a neighborhood in Athens known for its narrow streets, neoclassical buildings, and small cafes/taverns. It’s located right under the Acropolis hill, so if you’re walking up there anyway this is a great place to stop, get some lunch, and enjoy a glass of Greek wine (or two)
LITTLE KOOK
And we’re going out with a bang. If you are looking for something that's COMPLETELY over-the-top, this is it. This fairytale-inspired café serves coffee and a wide range of sweets. The decorations are seasonal, so if you visit Athens during Winter, for example, you’ll find yourself stepping into Santa’s workshop. But most parts of the year, the café is Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and has a Mary Poppins-themed room plus a ceiling made of umbrellas outside.
